Although best known as an actor, especially for his role as Cancer Man on The X-Files, Davis began his career as a theatre director. He trained in England and worked as a director in British repertory theatres as well as running the Dundee Repertory Theatre. From there he went to The National Theatre, returning to Canada in 1965 where he became Artistic Director at The National Theatre School and subsequently Artistic Director of Festival Lennoxville, and later the founder of Vancouver’s, The William Davis Centre for Actors’ Study. Currently he can be seen in the Amazon series, Upload. He published a memoir, Where There’s Smoke …. Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man im 2010. His latest book, On Acting...and life, released on May 3, 2022.
